"The foundation of all good teaching is the belief that we have a vision of each child and try to identify his or her greatest gift. Then they can begin to believe the most extraordinary things about themselves." Larry Brown, Humanities Faculty |
General Information
Gardner High School
was not always a high school. Much on the contrary, a person looking at the building where the actual school is today would certainly doubt that there was such a thing there. The stone building is simply massive. But, then again, there are a fair amount of administration offices there and then there is Bradford Municipal Library, occupying the entire West Wing of Gardner's Building. The edifice, built during the 30's, used to be residence to the Gardner Foundation, a project started posthumously after James Gardner III, an notable industrial, passed away after a prolonged illness. The building was used for the Gardner Foundation until one of its partners, one of Mr. Gardner's sons, committed the ultimate betrayal and stole all the funds, deviating them to private accounts of his. The Foundation was forced to close its doors since little money remained to keep it open.Mrs. Helen Gardner, due to lack of funds to maintain the building's doors open, had to sell it to Bradford's Town Hall. Since the Municipal Library's old location was almost falling apart, the Gardner Building was used to arbor it... and only then the rest of the building was used to create Gardner High School. Constructions for the first ended two months before the latter began to be built. It was the year 1957. Two years after it started, Gardner High was inaugurated. Various changes had to be performed on the building's inside to fit a school's layout but it was necessary so it was done. The first principal, Mr. Wellington, was the one to inaugurate the High School, on August 12, 1959. Ever since then Gardner High School has existed.
The School's symbol is the Lion and its colors are blue and yellow. The sports teams are the Gardner High Lions.
There are two entries to the high school, the East and the South one, which is the main one. It depends on which end you usually come from and which best suits you to enter from. The South entry is the one that connects to Liberty Avenue and the one used more often, especially by students. The East entry is used more often to receive visitors and for teachers from the East side of Bradford. The North part of the high school is reserved for the sports fields. It's mostly woods – trees, grass, and the such.
Various interconnected buildings compose Gardner Building, most of them four story high, others only three. On the outside, looking at it, no one would guess it was a High School, for it was too beautiful for it, but indeed it is. The students, even the more rebel ones with a kinship for Graffiti, do not harm the building on the outside in any 'visible' way. Apparently such a place instills respect even in the more disrespectful of persons. Good, or else Gardner Building would be long destroyed by now. Besides, it's against school policy and anyone caught exercising 'modern street art' on the school's walls will be suspended.
Gardner High School has two gymnasiums, one of them with a theatre stage built in for more informal meetings, a basketball court and more. The second gymnasium, denominated as Main Gymnasium, is larger and better equipped. The fact was, the first gymnasium should have been transformed into another room upon construction of the second one but opportunity never came up and now Gardner High has two of them. They work just fine, especially when there are more than one gym classes at the same time. Usually freshmen and juniors get the old gymnasium for their classes… they have complained of that before but it is the way things are.
There's a large auditorium where the drama club practices their plays and where the school band, the choir and the theatre actors perform during school's festivities. The auditorium provides seating for about 800 people for concerts, theatre and assemblies. Immediately outside the auditorium is an outdoor amphitheater. The choir and band practice room is two doors from the cafeteria which means sometimes there's practically live music there. No matter the room has been built with thick walls… sometimes the noise still goes through. Principal Campbell has been talking about getting some isolating walls, soundproof. The cafeteria, which opens to the North side's garden and the sports fields, is large enough to serve the needs of Gardner High School's students. The Arts building is just to the left of the cafeteria's outside garden, a few steps and you're there. It's easier to access it through here than walking all the way through the school's corridors to reach it. As said before, it's all interconnected but short cuts always exist.
The Principal's office is on the East side of the building, much like all administration offices and the Teacher's lounge. There's always someone there, for various numbers of reasons. Vice-Principal Keaton's office is located next to the Principal's and that place is the one most feared by the students. Ms. Keaton has a way of making one whiter pitifully under her scrutiny and she won't allow to be beaten down – that is why she holds grudges against everyone who dares defy her. Principal Campbell, on the other hand, is a pretty cool guy, for a near fifty-ish man. He's sympathetic and the complete opposite of his colleague. He will not act out of vengeance – he always thinks everything over very well. Near these offices is the Guidance Counselor's as well. Ms. Parker is always willing to receive students.
There are various labs, classrooms, and others within the walls of Gardner Building. The corridors are painted of light yellow and a soothing blue, the school's colors, mixed with white and an occasional bronze here and there. The doors to every are wooden and painted of a light yellow (and so are the cafeteria's) and those of the labs and non-classroom facilities have been painted of a bluish color. There are double doors to the cafeteria, the gyms, the office section and others; every other door is single. The walls are empty of decorations in some parts whether in others posters and the such adorn them. Usually the walls nearest the administration sections are emptier.
Near the Cafeteria's entrance is the Bulletin Board which holds messages of all kind, posted by teachers and students, regarding school events, job offerings, personal messages, etc. A new and larger board was added last year for the amount of messages was too big for the previous bard. A person just has to write a message and stick it with the pins spread on a box attached to the board, on it's left side. Some people have a tendency to 'borrow' a few pins but little can be done to prevent that.
Cafeteria
The cafeteria is a place where all students go at least once every day, be that during lunchtime or during any break they have where their stomachs growl in protest for the lack of nourishment. During breaks the cafeteria is open to serve the needs of hungry teenagers, serving snacks of all kinds. During lunch things grow and extend themselves to almost preposterous levels. Gardner High Cafeteria is famous for its amount of food offerings. There is only one big line that sometimes extends to the corridors – no matter how large the cafeteria is, the space sometimes is not enough to hold so many people. The food is not bad, the quality varying within the varieties that are offered. Most students lunch there, especially because they have classes right away and there is not nearly enough time to go home for lunch or to go out for lunch. The cafeteria's schedule is the following: Monday to Friday - 9:00am to 7:00pm; Saturday - 10:00am to 5:00pm.

- CAFETERIA RULES - All school rules apply with emphasis on the following:
Please follow the aforementioned rules for the better functioning of the cafeteria. |
Training Fields
On the outside there are the various sports training fields, such as the Track & Field one, the tennis court, the football field, among others. Students regularly train on the outside fields. Outdoor games are played yearly on the fields, most fields having audience seats. Gardner High has three tennis courts, a football field, a baseball field, an 11 players and one 5 players soccer field, a Field & Track field and the entire surrounding woods are used for the cross-country races. A swimming pool is being considered as one of the next constructions but although the plans have been approved, construction work will not start until springtime. Meanwhile the swimming team trains on the Bradford Sports Center. Indoor sports are practiced either in the main gymnasium or the old one.

Philosophy at Gardner High School
There are two assumptions or philosophical points that are implied in the attendance expectations.
- Time lost from class is essentially irretrievable in terms of opportunity for instructional interaction.

Health Services
The Health Office is located on the North Wing, next to the main auditorium. It is staffed by a team consisting of two full time registered nurses ad one half time health assistant to provide for the medical and health needs of students during regular school hours. The primary function of the health office is to provide assistance to students with serious or unexpected illness or injuries.
Illness: If a student requests to visit the nurse, he/she must first report to class, obtain a pass from the teacher, then proceed to the health office. Students should only leave class for acute illness or injury.

- LOCKERS:
Students are responsible for the condition of their original locker beginning with the first day of school. Locker problems should be reported in writing to the Administration Office. Each student is assigned an individual locker. Students should not share lockers. Lockers are school property loaned to students for the purpose of temporarily storing books, school material and clothing. The school may have any or all lockers searched if there is reasonable suspicion that one might contain illegal material.
The school does not assume any financial responsibility for property lost or stolen from lockers.
Students are urged to insure that lockers are kept properly locked.
A search may be done of a student or of his/her personal property if a school administrator considers that there is reasonable cause based on school rules dealing with theft, weapons, drugs or other illegal substances. Searches should be carried out in the presence of a second adult in a setting, which protects the privacy of the student to the greatest degree possible. Searches should be only as complete as reasonable to find the specific materials under suspicion. Student property may be confiscated and need not be returned where its use violates school regulations.
Regulations regarding student vehicles and parking
Seniors and Juniors are permitted to park on school premises as a matter of privilege, not of right. It is a cooperative relationship, which is permitted, as long as it does not become a problem. The school retains authority to conduct routine patrols of student parking lots and inspections of the exteriors and interiors of student vehicles. All student vehicles must be registered with the Student Activities Office (on the East Wing Administration Offices) by means of special forms. Any change, including new license plates, must be reported. Vehicles should be locked after arrival. The following regulations must be observed. (violation = report to registry and loss for 4 weeks)
Any student who loses his/her parking privilege may relinquish the sticker and may reapply again after the state time period. The form must be filled out again.
Disciplinary action: Detention
The School Committee authorizes the detention of students after normal school hours as a penalty for specific disciplinary offenses. Failure to report for assigned detention is a form of insubordination and results in suspension. When a student is absent or dismissed early from school on the day of an assigned detention, the detention will be reassigned to the next day the student attends school. No postponement of assigned detentions is possible except with prior permission of the house office.
- DETENTION RULES -
Detention begins 10 minutes after dismissal. There is no entrance after this time without authorization from the School Administration Office. Students entering detention late without authorization may be suspended.
During detention there will be no recreational items, which includes no cards, no games, no tobacco, electronic devices (such as radios, CD players, beepers, walkman, tape decks, etc.) or use of phone (no cell phones are allowed). All students must be seated at individual tables (if possible) and may not go to lockers during detentions. Students are expected to do their schoolwork quietly.
Neither work nor sports are excuses for early dismissal or changing of assigned detention. Students who are asked to leave due to their behavior will be suspended.
Disciplinary action: Suspension
When a student's behavior becomes disruptive to the educational process, he/she may be temporarily barred from school attendance. A suspension is an action which will permit the return of a student after a set number of days or when certain conditions have been met by the student. Missed schoolwork may be made within the number of days equal to the suspension.
- GROUNDS FOR SUSPENSION -

- The parent or guardian of the student is notified by telephone before the student is released during a school day. The parent or guardian must, within reasonable amount of time, come to school, meet with the Principal or Vice-Principal and dismiss the student.
- A written notice to the student and parent or guardian will be sent by standard mail to the most current mailing address available to the school.
- Within two school days after the beginning of the suspension, the student and his/her parent or guardian must be given an opportunity, if desired, to meet in person with the Principal or Vice-Principal, whoever assigned the suspension, for a full review of facts and reasons. Except for the parent or guardian and the student, no person is permitted at such a meeting without permission of the Principal or Vice-Principal.
- If the meeting results in any change in the disciplinary action not reflected in the written notice, a letter confirming the outcome of the meeting will be sent within one school day.

Note
The assorted school information in this guide has been gathered from some sources, pertaining real high schools, most on the state of Massachusetts. It's all to make the game seem a little more real, although I urge the player to remember the game is not real, just something for us to have fun with. Fun is the word of order. If the player is interested in adding something to the guide, please e-mail me with suggestions and/or additions.
